And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
Psalm 55:6
“O that I had wings like a dove,
For then would I fly away and be at rest!”
Frequently I have yearned within my breast
To flee to yon celestial home above.
Troubles come that seize my weakened soul
And make me long for heaven’s happy shore.
In Glory I shall sorrow nevermore;
A path of ease my weary feet shall stroll.
For one beloved is rudely seized by death.
And loneliness has seized my wounded heart.
I feel I can’t go on without my counterpart,
And now I wish to draw my final breath.
“No,” God says, “your time has not yet come.
I have much more to teach you; more to purge.
Your life is not yet perfect, so I urge
You: Rest content until I call you home.”
No longer do I fret about my ills,
Yet still I long for Heaven’s sweet release,
When sin that so encumbers me shall cease.
To Heaven I shall fly when my Lord wills.
Then I His lovely face at last shall see,
And thank my precious Lord for choosing me.
One night in church I was thinking of the many reasons why people long for Heaven. I had originally thought of writing about the changes in my own perspective, but then I moved in the direction of brevity.
When I was young, I had no desire for Heaven at all because I wanted to get married, have children, see my grandchildren, etc. I had too much to do to go to Heaven.
For some time now I have longed for Home, but my motives have progressively changed. At first I just wanted to escape my troubles. Then I wanted to be free from physical pain. Later, as God began to call one loved one after another to His side, I learned what it is to feel the longing to be reunited with those dear people. Lately, my great desire is to be rid of the sin in my own life. I am weary of this sinful, selfish body, and I long to be pure and clean once and for all. But perhaps the one reason I long for heaven that surpasses all other motivation is that I may see my Savior Jesus Christ face to face, so I can thank Him for choosing me.

Yes, I can relate. Funny how God creates in us a yearning to go home. Thanks.

I can relate to so much that you wrote here, especially about not being particularly interested in going to heaven when I was younger. But know this is true… “But perhaps the one reason I long for heaven that surpasses all other motivation is that I may see my Savior Jesus Christ face to face.” Amen!
