Waiting for the Light

woman sitting in dark with open Bible and single candle burning

I sit here in the darkness,
Waiting for Your light
To shine through the window.
For far too long my steps have been guided
By my own little flickering candle.
Oh, Lord,
When will the morning come?
My window is not clean,
But surely Your light can penetrate my imperfection.

I look away and stare blindly into the blackness of the room—
Away from my flickering candle.
Suddenly I see it!
A sliver of light, a ray of hope,
Shoots across the dusky room
And comes to rest
On me!
The window is shuttered!
No wonder Your light can’t come in!

I run to the window and throw it wide open,
Expecting to be blinded by the light.
Your Son is more radiant than all the lights of heaven,
But His glory does not hurt my eyes.
No longer needed, I snuff my flickering candle.
Now I walk in the everlasting light of Your precious Son
Who, warming me, filling me with joy,
And chasing away every hint of darkness,
Does what my little flickering candle could never do.

I wanted to share a verse of Scripture with you, but could not decide on just one, so today you get a baker’s dozen! And even this small sampling only scratches the surface of the blessings that await us inside God’s holy Word.

2 Samuel 23:4 And He shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.

Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 89:15 Blessed is the people who know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of Your countenance.

Psalm 112:4 Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness: He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

Psalm 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding unto the simple.

Ecclesiastes 11:7 Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.

Isaiah 2:5 O house of Jacob, come you, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Isaiah 60:20 Your sun shall no more go down; neither shall your moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended.

John 8:12 Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, “I am the light of the world: he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believes on Me should not abide in darkness.

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.

Revelation 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
