The following is my response to this week’s Five-Minute-Friday prompt. This is a place where many people gather, set their timers to 5 minutes, and free-write on a given topic. Today’s prompt is: IMPORTANT.
And, GO…
Is writing important to me? Yes. Is community important to me? Absolutely. Then why have I not participated in Five Minute Friday since October 2020? That’s a mighty long hiatus. That’s about 60 weeks in a row of saying, “I don’t have time today. Maybe next week.”
What? No time? for a five-minute free-write? What in the world is wrong when I cannot find five little minutes to do what I love (plus another 25 or so to read what some of my fellow writers have contributed)? All told, that’s only a half hour.
But I’ll bet on those Fridays I found a half hour to daydream, to work a puzzle, to browse social media, to do things that are not important.
This year I have made a commitment to myself to be more intentional with the way I spend my time. There is so much to do, and we all get the same 24 hours in a day. Writing is one of those things I find to be important, and so, by God’s grace, I’ll stop saying, “Maybe next week,” and just do it.
STOP.

What do I find on Friday
in dear Kate’s writers’ fold?
Amigos helping on the way,
for I shall not grow old
as cancer tears at every part,
organs and, now, bone,
but I have a merry heart
for I am not alone,
but carried by my Simons
who dare to laugh with me
and break the awesome silence
en route to Calvary
to which height I will ascend
in company of blessed friends.

I’m so glad you took those five minutes! I sometimes find it hard to participate (and wish there was a way to get the prompt the night before) but I always find it beneficial. And fun!!

Hopefully this year I’ll be “on again” more often than “off again.” 🙂
