Everlasting Mercy

Psalm 136, which is intended to be read responsively, is to me one of the most beautiful of all the psalms. I wanted to make it personal, so I modified the lines that were specific to the Hebrews, and thus made it a true prayer of gratitude for God’s everlasting mercy to me—indeed, to all of us.

O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good,
for His mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods,
for His mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the Lord of lords,
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who alone does great wonders,
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who stretched out the earth above the waters,
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who made great lights:
for His mercy endures forever.
The sun to rule by day,
for His mercy endures forever.
The moon and stars to rule by night;
for His mercy endures forever.

To Him who kept us safe in times of danger,
for His mercy endures forever.
And brought us through both injury and illness
for His mercy endures forever.
With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm;
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who opened doors of opportunity,
for His mercy endures forever.
And made us to pass through the midst of them,
for His mercy endures forever.
Doors which no man could open or close;
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who fought our battles for us,
for His mercy endures forever.
And defended us when others attacked without cause
for His mercy endures forever.
Our character and our reputation,
for His mercy endures forever.
Or tried to force us to go against our conscience;
for His mercy endures forever.
To Him who turned evil to good,
for His mercy endures forever.
And caused us to rejoice in what seemed to be ruin;
for His mercy endures forever.

Who remembered us in our low estate,
for His mercy endures forever.
And has redeemed us from all our sins,
for His mercy endures forever.
Who gives us everything we will ever need:
for His mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the God of heaven!
for His mercy endures forever.
