O might my lot be cast with these,
The least of Jesus’ witnesses:
O that my Lord would count me meet
To wash His dear disciples’ feet!This only thing do I require,
Thou know’st ’tis all my heart’s desire:
Freely what I receive to give,
As servant of Thy Church to live.After my lowly Lord to go,
And wait upon Thy saints below;
Enjoy the grace to angels given,
And serve the royal heirs of heaven.Lord, if I now Thy drawings feel,
Charles Wesley
And ask according to Thy will,
Confirm the prayer, the seal impart,
And speak the answer to my heart.
Copied from my grandmother’s hymnal, Hymn Book, Methodist Episcopal Church, South: Nashville, TN, 1901, Hymn #207.
And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
Mark 10:44
This hymn, this prayer uttered from the heart of one who loves and lives to serve others, reminds me of my mother. I cannot think of a better hymn to share with you on the day that we celebrate mothers across this nation. I hope your mother was as kind, loving, and selfless as mine. And whether she was all that or not, I hope you will be such a mother to your own precious children. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who will read this, no matter where you are!
Note: The hymns in this hymnal are not titled. So when I do not know the hymn, I make up a title or simply use the first line.
