from Day 9
“Waiting on God: With the Heart”
People imagine that if they are occupied with the truth, the spiritual life will as a matter of course be strengthened. And this is by no means the case. The understanding deals with conceptions and images of divine things, but it cannot reach the real life of the soul. Hence the command, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” It is with the heart man believes and comes into touch with God. It is in the heart God has placed His Spirit, to be to us the presence and the power of God working in us. In all our religion, it is the heart that must trust and love and worship and obey. My mind is utterly unable to create or maintain the spiritual life within me. The heart must wait on God for Him to work it in me.
Murray, Andrew. Waiting on God (CLC Publications: Fort Washington, PA, 1999), 48.
I have deliberately limited myself to only twelve quotes from this book, as with every book which I feature here, but there is so much more that I wanted to share with you. Of course, I’ve shared these twelve clips to whet your appetite to want to read this devotional book for yourself, so by all means get this book and make it a part of your quiet time. Andrew Murray is one of my favorite authors, and his writings never cease to encourage, uplift, and convict my heart.
