If You Could Know My Mother

white climbing roses draped over the fenceIf you could know my mother well,
If you could know her as do I,
The countless stories she could tell,
She’d keep you laughing ‘til you cry.

You’d recognize her right away—
I favor her in face and mien.
An extra score, yet dare I say,
She favors me in youthful sheen.

Her house is spotless—very much
Like walking through a magazine;
And yet it loses not the touch
Of comfort, home, repose serene.

And what a table she can spread!—
That southern belle my daddy found.
You’ll push away quite amply fed—
No finer cook for miles around.

She loves to make us laugh and smile,
‘Cause laughter hides the hurt she feels.
She’s cheerful because that’s her style,
And joyfulness all sorrow heals.

She hasn’t known more pain than most,
But she has surely borne her share.
About herself she will not boast;
She’s poor in pity, rich in care.

I hope someday you’ll come to know
The mother whom I treasure so.
You’d love her just the way I do,
And I’m quite sure she’d love you too.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms
