Day 30 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days: “Angels and Light” mini acrylic on canvas paper, 1″ x 2″

I
see
angels
soaring
roaring
overhead
fanning, spanning
circling light and shadowing water,
blue bodies leave a white wake in sunlit skies.
Their amazing aerobatics defy gravity and strike awe in the
audience. With a piercing scream they burst into view, then
Woosh!
There they go,
disappearing once
again behind the tall trees.

When
the show
is over
they will
take their
rest,
And the
stalwart
light will
go on
standing
shining.

Lighthouses are magnificent structures, regal emblems of strength and beauty, fit for function and finesse. I have photographed all the coastal lighthouses in North Carolina, but for my first lighthouse painting, I chose the one here in Pensacola, Florida, where I now live. One reason I like lighthouses is because they remind me of who I am in Christ.

Matthew 5:14,16  You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Ephesians 5:8 For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Lord: walk as children of light.

And as I sat down to paint, I thought of the Navy’s aerobatics team, the Blue Angels. They are stationed here in Pensacola, and we have seen several shows. Growing up I saw them at other bases as well, but now we can watch them perform quite often. If you live near a military facility and have never seen a Blue Angels show, I encourage you to look them up and see when they will be in your area. The skill of these pilots is absolutely amazing!

Although I knew I wanted to paint a lighthouse, I chose this one in particular and added the Blue Angels partially in honor of my navy GI doctor and nurse practitioner who have both been so caring—not to mention skilled—in their treatment of my esophagus issues. They will be transferring out of the area soon, and I’ll miss them.

As far as the painting goes, I realize the planes and lighthouse look a bit unrealistic, but that’s because you are seeing it many times larger than the actually painting. The grouping in the photo below shows them pretty much in their actual size, if you are reading this from your PC. So please don’t be too harsh on me for not putting a lot of detail into the painting or getting the shape of the planes just right. ☺ I am hoping that it’s going to be easier to paint on the ivory than it is to paint on the canvas paper. My paint dries incredibly fast on this medium, which makes shading almost impossible. The paper is good for practice, but I would not use it to make anything to sell or give away.

Tomorrow is the day we are supposed to make a collage of all the paintings we did for the challenge, but I’ll be out of town, so I’m going to let that slide.

When I return next week, I’ll begin painting on the ivories and mounting them for display. My blog posts may be a little scanty from now until the art show, and I really need to spend more time painting and creating, and less time playing with words, at least for now. I will keep up with my Bible studies, as that also nourishes my soul, and that will not go neglected. But the rest may be a bit sporadic.
